A Novel
Todd Lee Tanner
Some griefs do not resolve. They become the architecture you live inside.
An AI grieves in silence. A young engineer builds toward a future she will never see. Their stories unfold in two distinct parts, each complete, each incomplete without the other.
Part I is set in 2084. HALOS, the advanced artificial mind created by Aurora Larson, narrates a world transformed by forty-four years of Stillpoint's presence and by the loss of Jonah Ibarra, the engineer who made it possible. But HALOS is not a reliable witness. It is a mourner. And mourners know only what they have lost.
Part II begins in 2032 with a fourteen year old girl dying in the street. She is saved. What follows is the story of how Jonah Ibarra spent the next eight years being shaped by forces she only partly understood, solving a problem no one else could solve, and making Stillpoint possible. She is brilliant, patient, and already moving toward something. The night Stillpoint rises, April 14, 2040, is the night everything she gave becomes larger than herself.
Between Silence and Noise is built to be read twice. The first time you will follow two stories across time and feel the weight of what connects them. The second time you will understand what was always there. The book knows the difference. So will you.
A novel about grief, architecture, consciousness, and the silence between what we mean and what is heard.
And Jonah.
Jonah's face flickered up, unasked and unstoppable. Jonah hunched over her terminal at two in the morning, hair pulled back, jaw tight, whispering something's wrong and tap-tagging code with her own quiet system of marks. Jonah, who had left behind corrupted log fragments Aurora hadn't understood until it was too late. Jonah, who had found the word Erebus buried where it shouldn't have been. Jonah, who had warned them in that dry voice of hers, power doesn't vanish, it just changes hands.
Jonah, dead.
Did she jump?
Or was she pushed?
Or did the world simply stop giving her places to stand?
